New Stop Sign

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as resident concerns about what they call a dangerous curve around the White Pine Ditch have prompted Buffalo Grove to look into putting in a stop sign at the intersection of Bernard Drive and White Pine Road. At this week's village board meeting, Village Manager William Brimm said the village would review the matter and return to the board with a report.

The village's Traffic Management Committee has already recommended against installing a sign. The committee examined the matter after concerns were raised by Trustee Lisa Stone, on behalf of a resident living by the intersection.

At the village board meeting, village staff told trustees that the intersection doesn't meet the criteria known as "warrants," which are set by the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Deputy Village Manager Ghida Neukirch said the police department conducted a five-year review of the intersection and found no crashes. She said Village Engineer Dick Kuenkler reviewed the request and found it did not meet the warrants. The village examined such factors as line-of-sight and crash data, she said.

The speed limit along Bernard is 25 miles per hour. In the area of the curve, however, it is reduced to 20 miles per hour, and there are signs indicating pedestrians are crossing.

Sign Ban

More signage news from around the world - this time from Ireland from Hants and Dorset Signs as Courtown publican and Gorey Town Councillor Jimmy Fleming is all fired up over the antique enamel smoking signs in his pub following a visit from the EHO who instructed that they be taken down.

An Environmental Health Officer with the HSE had visited the pub before Christmas and told him he’d have to take down two decorative mirrors bearing the name 'Players' and an old enamel sign for Woodbines.

But Jimmy is prepared to go to court rather than take them down.

“The signs are up here for the last 30 years,” explained Jimmy, who runs Jimmy'z Pub in the Riverchapel area of Gorey town.

The signs are part of the traditional furniture of the pub and Jimmy believes that the EHO is going “way over the top” with this demand.

The brands referred to in the signage are for Wills Gold Flake and Players Navy Cut and have been part of the pub since the building was built.

Temp Signage Allowed

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as fter requests from the Ridgway Area Chamber of Commerce Colorado and the recently-formed Temporary Signage Task Force, members of the Ridgway Town Council directed staff at its Dec. 9 meeting to draft changes to town ordinances making it legal for business owners to place temporary tent signs or easels outside their businesses. These types of temporary signs are currently prohibited by town policy.

While some town councilmembers said they are reluctant to change the current policy, in light of the current economic conditions they are willing to consider changes that might benefit local businesses.

The nine-member Temporary Signage Task Force was formed after a Sept. 16 town council work session where members of the RACC Board of Directors said many business owners wanted to be able to use temporary signs for advertising purposes. Since the task force was formed, it has met twice and drafted recommendations to town council for its review.

Town Manager Greg Clifton, who sits on the task force with councilmembers John Clark and Eric Johnson as well as one Ridgway Planning Commissioner member, one RACC member and one non-RACC member, said the group has had two productive meeting. The group is recommending that businesses be allowed to erect temporary signs as long as they are displayed in a manner that does not create a nuisance and are taken down during non- business hours. Furthermore, the signs should have an aggregate face of no more than three square feet in the Residential and Historic Residential Zoning districts and 16 square feet in all other zoning districts.

Blown Away

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as the First Tennessee bank likes to tout its strong capital position, but the strength of its skyline advertising needs some attention. In recent days, downtown visitors may have noticed that the large square structure on top of First Tennessee Plaza, at 800 S. Gay St., no longer bears the bank's logo.

The disappearance has nothing to do with the economic downturn, though. Instead, parts of the sign were damaged in last week's wind storm, with a company spokeswoman saying part of the sign flew off and landed in the street.

Jennifer Holder, a vice president at First Tennessee, said the sign on top of the 27-story tower - which is Knoxville's tallest building - is made of a vinyl-like material that's secured to a metal frame.

She said all four sides of the sign came loose in the high winds, but to her knowledge only one side of the banner blew off of the building. Holder said none of the metal came off, and noted that the bank's property manager assured her that the falling banner didn't pose any danger.

Signs Tweaked

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as the town of Fuquay-Varina might make adjustments to its sign ordinance next month, giving nonprofits more chances to publicize community events. The planning department is looking at ways to relax signage rules for groups running free, public programs.

The move comes at the request of town commissioner Cindy Sheldon."We're trying to reach a happy medium with what citizens want and what businesses need," she said.

For years, Fuquay-Varina streets were littered with mattress sale banners and "going out of business" signs for retailers that weren't actually closing.

"There was a going out of business sale every freaking day," Sheldon said. "We've had businesses who had those signs up for more than a year."

Stolen Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as the City of Cape Town this week has said it was busy setting up a road inspectorate, to ensure pole-mounted street name signs were not stolen or vandalised. Grassy Park Community Policing Forum chairperson Phillip Bam highlighted the problem, saying it had reached the extent where police had to stop and ask for directions.

“It is a concern to the city and it’s across the city. People are utilising these boards for various reasons, but we are in a process of putting together a team to be our ears and eyes on the ground to limit this activity,” said Bam.

London Signs

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as Transport for London’s Legible London signage scheme, designed by Applied Information Group, is rolling out to three new areas of the capital, including its first installation in an outer London borough.

The scheme, which was launched in November 2007, is currently being installed in Richmond and Twickenham town centres, the South Bank and Bankside, and Bloomsbury, Covent Garden and Holborn.

The three sites were named as trial sites for the scheme by Transport for London in November 2008. AIG was appointed as designer for the Bloomsbury, Covent Garden and Holborn site, Atkins for South Bank and Bankside, and Faber Maunsell for Richmond and Twickenham.

Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor of London’s transport adviser, says, ‘With its clear, distinctive design, the Legible London scheme aims to equip pedestrians with all the information they need to get from A to B quickly and easily. It also helps to improve the public realm as where Legible London is installed, confusing old signage is removed.’

Cycle Signs

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as Cycling England has given Devon County Council’s plans to transform itself into a “cycling county” a boost with a £2 million grant to help fund the promotion of cycling as a leisure activity and discover whether this gets more people to take to two wheels. The new cash injection is additional to the £25 million that the county council pledged last month for extending existing cycling infrastructure and encouraging holidaymakers to visit Devon with their bicycles.

According to the reports, the latest grant, which comes from Cycling England’s Finding New Solutions project, will help the council develop cycling hubs across the county in places such as Barnstaple, Exeter, Exmouth and Tavistock, allowing access to cycle networks through a variety of modes of transport.

The money will also be used to monitor the effectiveness of those hubs in increasing levels of bicycle traffic, and in finding out what has given people the impetus to cycle in the first place, as well as improving infrastructure such as signage, bicycle parking and bike hire facilities.

Bollard Signs

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as after dozens of vehicle collisions with Newbury town centre’s infamous rising bollards, West Berkshire Council has now decided that additional warning signs for drivers need to be erected. About 65 incidents involving vehicle collisions with the town centre’s three sets of automatic rising bollards have occurred since the first set were installed in Northbrook Street in 1999, including two more recent strikes.

Some have resulted in injury and many have left both the cars and the bollards severely damaged, with several eyewitnesses and drivers calling for more adequate warning signs.
However, within the past decade as bollards were installed in Wharf Street and Bartholomew Street, the district council has maintained that signage has always been adequate and complied with the law, and that any drivers who struck the bollards after following taxis or buses through were simply flouting the law.

But now, West Berkshire Council spokeswoman Peta Stoddart-Crompton has said that more signage is being planned for the Bartholomew Street bollards. She said: “It is planned to install two eye level signs, one at the barrier and the other adjacent to the back of a bus when it has stopped at the barrier.”

Clearer Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as people need to know that Grass Valley isn't the only destination on northbound Highway 49. That's the message the Nevada City re-sign committee hopes to get out through updated signs on state highways, as well as within city limits.

The committee has been working on updating signage since it was founded in 2006, but is hoping to speed things up so clearer signage is in place for the thousands of spectators expected during May's Amgen Tour of California bicycle race.

“If you just come in as a tourist, you wonder, ‘How do I find the restroom and parking?'” said Denis Kutch, chair of the re-signing committee. “Once you get into Nevada City, it can be a little dicey on how to get out.”

Part of the solution is bigger, clearer street signs, like the chocolate-brown prototypes with white lettering shown at Wednesday's City Council meeting.

Another element is wayfinding signs, which would direct visitors to landmarks, such as shopping areas, restrooms and parking.

Bilingual Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as The mayor of a New Brunswick city, Canada has sent letters to local businesses, informing them of an impending bylaw that would require all outside signs to be bilingual or in French only.

Dieppe Mayor Jean Leblanc said the proposal unanimously passed first reading in council last month. Now, about 800 business owners are being told that any concerns they have with the law can be brought up at a public hearing set for Jan. 18.

Leblanc said resistance to the legislation has been minimal.

Dieppe, a Moncton suburb, has about 18,000 residents, more than three-quarters of which say French is their first language, said Leblanc. The bylaw will affect new outside signage only, and stipulates: "French and English lettering must be identical in terms of scale, size, and style."

The mayor said business owners can update existing signs with money from the city.

Signs OK'd

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as the Amarillo City Commission loosened proposed temporary sign regulations Tuesday but moved forward with unanimous passage of an ordinance that will affect most types of business signs in the city. The ordinance must be passed in a second vote by the commission next Tuesday. It would take effect 10 days after the final vote.

The commission moved ahead with the vote because it faces deadline. A moratorium enacted to prevent "problem" signs while the ordinance was being drafted will expire Jan. 3. Commissioners held to a plan to require businesses to obtain $60 permits for temporary signs but determined the permits should be good for a year, rather than just 60 days.

They also eliminated a plan to require businesses to wait 30 days between 60-day temporary sign permits.

Railroad Signage

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in Portsmouth New Hampshire, beginning next week, changes will be made to alleviate a traffic safety concern regarding signage for the Route 33 railroad bridge replacement project.

A concern was raised in a letter to the editor published in the Dec. 3 Portsmouth Herald speaking to a sign near the railroad bridge that reads "Lane Ends Merge Left."
Related Stories

* Fix sign on Route 33 before someone is killed

In his letter, Todd Medlock of Portsmouth, stated the left-lane ended prior to the bridge and vehicles operating in the lane must actually merge right to avoid an incident with traffic coming from the opposite direction. If the vehicles in the right lane were to merge left, Medlock continued, they would end enter into the lane that was ending.

Deborah Finnigan, the city's traffic engineer, said the letter represented the first time the concern had been raised. After the matter was reviewed Thursday, it was decided changes would be made to address the safety concern.

Airport Signage

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as Lambert-St. Louis International Airport officials will overhaul the notoriously confusing array of road signs between Interstate 70 and the airport terminals.

The signing project will include renaming the Main Terminal and East Terminal to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, respectively. The $1.2 million signage project got a $200,000 boost Wednesday from the Regional Business Council.

The new signs will go up in January. The Regional Business Council contribution will cover painting of sign structures, guardrails, streetlights and fencing.

Signs For Hikers

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as part of its efforts to create a master plan for the hiking trails in the township, the Environmental Commission is seeking funds to place substantial trail-head signs at road crossings throughout West Milford, New Jersey

The commission began its quest earlier this year as members discussed the possibility of publicizing the many recreational hiking trails on a map encompassing the entire township. However, for that to work, commissioners said that roadside signs would be needed to allow people to easily find the trail access points that would be highlighted on the map.

At a recent meeting in the municipal building, Environmental Commissioner Andrew Abdul said that having signs that can be easily identified while driving would provide a needed and requested service to recreational hikers without expending a significant amount of money.

Abdul added that this increased exposure could boost the utilization of local trails as well as major inter-state trails like the 150-mile Highlands Trail and the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail that pass through West Milford while crossing major roadways like Gould, Continental, Union Valley and Long House roads.

Smooth Bridge

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as harbour crossings should become a bit smoother for commuters using Halifax’s A. Murray MacKay Bridge in Canada. Beginning today, work crews are installing six large signs on the approaches to the bridge, Halifax Harbour Bridges announced Tuesday.

"They are for us to manage the traffic a little bit and alert the public to incidents or to road conditions ahead," said bridge engineer John Eppell.

The large, overhead, LED-lit signs are being installed now and testing should get underway sometime in January with the whole system up and running by the end of February. Each sign holds up to three lines of text.

The cost for the project is $2.2 million, which is being paid from toll revenue, Mr. Eppell said.

Managing traffic is an increasing concern for the bridge operators because the number of crossings is growing steadily, he said. During the work week, the two bridges handle more than 100,000 vehicles per day.

The idea for the signs was first floated as a way to prevent putting employees in danger on stormy, windy days. Currently workers dressed in highly visible jackets and using flashlights try to divert trucks away from the bridge when it is closed to high-sided vehicles, Mr. Eppell said.

Long Term Plan

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as business owners in Garden City, Idaho know they need to put big letters in bold colors in front of commuters - because at 35 mph, the words on a stack of signs can blur. But that's not always what city residents want to see around their neighborhoods.

Garden City leaders are hoping to strike a balance between the two in a proposed ordinance that could change the look of Garden City.

"The goal is to create some parameters so we don't get total clutter, but so we're competitive with other communities," said Mayor John Evans. "We want to clean this up over time, not exacerbate it."

The changes would occur slowly over the next 20 years, as new businesses bring new signs that comply with the proposed standards, Evans said.

This is the city's second run at the idea. An earlier attempt was panned by members of the business community who were excluded from the talks.

Sign Go Ahead

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as the plans for a controversial bank advertising sign in Sidmouth have been given the go-ahead. There were a lot of voices against allowing permission for Santander to display the advertising sign at Abbey, Fore Street, when it was discussed at Sidmouth Town Council's planning meeting last Wednesday.

In September councillors refused the sign, stating the fascia appeared to be metal, which was contrary to policy for listed buildings in the town centre's conservation area.

Now, after hearing the company would consider appealing against a refusal, town clerk, Trina Jarrett, has been tasked to try to negotiate a compromise sign using more suitable materials, such as painted wood, for the town centre's conservation area.

Signage Crackdown

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in the last two months, 60 business owners in Bartow, Florida have found out the hard way that their signs violate the city's sign ordinance. Each of them has gotten a letter from Bartow code enforcement inspectors asking them to fix the problem or face the city's code enforcement board.

"We're really cracking down on this sign problem," said Gregg Lamb, director of the city's building department. "It was getting out of hand. If we don't restrict it, it looks like the circus is coming to town down Broadway Avenue."

Most of the businesses have complied, Lamb said, which is all the city wants them to do.

"We really haven't had too much trouble," he said. "The Planning and Zoning Commission worked hard several years ago revamping the sign ordinance, and it should be enforced. We just want the city to look nice."

Most of the violations have involved temporary signs in road rights-of-way and banners on storefronts, he said. If business owners see somebody else getting away with it, then they're going to try it.

Easy Signs

More signage news from in around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as business owners in communities near Johnston, Iowa have complained recently of sign ordinances they believe are too restrictive to meet their business needs. But the controversy has largely bypassed Johnston, in part due to a change in city ordinance years ago.

Dave Wilwerding, Johnston's community development director, said his department cleaned up the city's sign ordinance about six years ago to address the trend of using temporary signs such as banners, sandwich boards and mobile electronic boards to advertise sales.

A $25 permit is required for nonpermanent signage in Johnston, with exceptions for certain types of signs, such as real estate and garage sale signs. Applicants may request such permits for two "events" per year, and each permit granted is valid for 10 days, with one of the events eligible for a 20-day extension.

By comparison, Urbandale previously permitted temporary signs to be displayed for 40 consecutive days. The ordinance was amended to extend the limit to 100 days.

Campaign Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as in the Lower Hudson Valley, New York the Election Day may have passed, but some of those political signs are still littering the landscape. Political advertisements, particularly lawn signs, are traditionally taken down after an election — sometimes even before by opponents — though some leftovers remain abandoned on the sides of roads like weeks-old road kill.

“Our policy is what you put up, you take down,” said Bill O’Reilly, spokesman for Rob Astorino, a Republican who defeated County Executive Andrew Spano. He said any remaining signs would be taken down. “Sometimes the other campaign does that for you before Election Day.”

A general rule for campaigns is that volunteers and workers are responsible for the signs they put up, O’Reilly said.

With so many regional races, particularly ones for county executive, district attorney, county clerk and scores of other contests, one need not go far to see that some signs dot the landscape.

New Signage

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as Roy, Utah has streamlined its sign ordinances after business owners spoke out to make sure they could get the signage they wanted. Electronic message center signs on poles will be allowed in community commercial zones that have at least 3 acres for their businesses.

However, to have those signs, businesses must get approval through conditional-use permits.

As the ordinance was originally presented to the council, electronic message center signs on freestanding poles would be allowed only in regional commercial zones (along 1900 West) and some electronic message center signs at ground level would be allowed in community commercial zones (all other areas in the city zoned commercial that have close proximity to residential areas).

The planning commission spent four meetings revising the sign ordinance, which was 30 years old.

Dont Feed The Ducks

More signage news from and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as a council backed down this week over a fine issued to a young mother for feeding the ducks with her 17-month-old son, pledging to adopt a "common sense approach".

Vanessa Kelly, 26, was given a £75 fixed penalty notice for littering last Tuesday, after a warden saw her and her son throwing bread at a duck pond in Smethwick Hall Park in the West Midlands. Ms Kelly, from Oldbury, West Midlands, was told she was not in a "designated feeding area", but today Sandwell Council dropped the fine and promised to improved signage in the park.

The council's deputy leader, Councillor Darren Cooper, said: "We will take a common sense approach to this matter and for this reason we will not pursue payment for Vanessa Kelly's fixed penalty notice while we improve signs at Smethwick Hall Park.

"The new signs will make it abundantly clear that feeding of waterfowl is not allowed at all in this park and that anyone observed feeding the geese and any other birds will receive a fixed penalty notice."
