The committee has been working on updating signage since it was founded in 2006, but is hoping to speed things up so clearer signage is in place for the thousands of spectators expected during May's Amgen Tour of California bicycle race.
“If you just come in as a tourist, you wonder, ‘How do I find the restroom and parking?'” said Denis Kutch, chair of the re-signing committee. “Once you get into Nevada City, it can be a little dicey on how to get out.”
Part of the solution is bigger, clearer street signs, like the chocolate-brown prototypes with white lettering shown at Wednesday's City Council meeting.
Another element is wayfinding signs, which would direct visitors to landmarks, such as shopping areas, restrooms and parking.
