Signs that do not conform to the new regulations will be allowed to remain in place. They would only be required to come down or meet the new standards if they became dilapidated or obsolete because the business they advertise no longer operates. The proposed ordinance discussed by the committee would set standards for business signs according to the type of thoroughfare on which they are located.
Businesses along interstate and state highways would be allowed larger, taller signs than those on commercial arteries because their signs are designed to be seen from far distances by drivers at highway speeds.
