County Signs Not Upto Scratch

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as The Williamson County Sheriff's Department said dozens of new signs in the county will ward off criminals, but officials at TDOT said some of the signs weren't approved for state roads. Sheriff Jeff Long placed 35 signs across the county reminding drivers that deputies are on patrol to protect the area. Officials at TDOT said some of the signs could actually be endangering drivers on Williamson County roads.

TDOT officials said too much signage can confuse and distract drivers, or pose a danger to cars that leave the roadway. The sheriff's department admitted it didn't look at state procedures before putting the signs up about a month ago. TDOT engineers will take a look at the signs to see if they can stay. In the meantime, the sheriff's department does not want the mix up to overshadow the original message on the signs.

Save Our A Signs

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as traders and businesses in Henley are calling on the town council not to ban advertising boards. They claim the move could put shops out of business and have started a petition against it. More than 40 businesses, including restaurants, pubs, shops and art galleries, use the signs to attract customers.

But councillors have said they turn the streets into an “obstacle course” for disabled people and those with impaired vision. The council, which has the power to ban the signs and remove them, will decide at a meeting on Tuesday whether to impose an enforcement strategy on businesses.

Ian Blandford, owner of Gabriel Machins butchers in Market Place, said: “We use our board to promote special offers, what’s in season and the best prices. We also use it as a public information board.

“We do not put it in the middle of the pavement, it is always to one side. We are not obstructing anyone. Some shops aren’t considerate about where they put their boards. The council needs to talk to those shops rather than having one rule for all. It should be sensible about it.”

City Reviews Signage Code After 40 Years

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as when the city of Deer Park, Cincinnati drew up the comprehensive plan and updated the zoning code, the sign code was also given a fresh look. Safety service director Mike Berens said both the zoning and sign codes had not been updated since 1969. He said before the update there was very minimal sign regulations and everything from permit procedures to sign sizes were updated in the new code.

Under the updated sign code, Berens said that the city will regulate all new signage in the business district of the city with size and permit requirements. Most of the signs that were in place before the code was passed earlier this year were grandfathered into the code. Berens said that any new business signs or current businesses who change signs will need to follow all sign code requirements.

One of the main purposes of updating the sign code was to draw new businesses into the city.

City Reviews Mobile-Sign Laws

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as the Canadian city of Hamilton is moving to lift some of its restrictions on signs in the city. Some complain that a city bylaw, in force since 2007, hurts small businesses, farmers and even humanitarian causes such as missing-person posters.

The bylaw restricts how long mobile signs can remain, how much colour can be used and where the signs can be placed. Posters, banners and other signage are also covered by the rules. After finishing a review of the new bylaw, city staff are now recommending some rules be revised.

Some of the proposed changes include increasing the mobile-sign permit period and cost, which would translate into a cheaper net daily permit rate; abolishing a permit hiatus period; and quashing rules on colour usage.

Other changes would include allowing A-frame signs to be displayed on road allowances in rural locations without a permit, and not eliminating the need for permits for banners less than one square metre.

New Style London Tube Signage Rejected

More signage news from in and around the UK from Hants and Dorset Signs as A "furious" London Mayor Boris Johnson has ordered Transport for London (TfL) to restore the River Thames on revised Tube maps. TfL distributed the maps last weekend without the River Thames or the fare zones marked on it. The mayor reacted angrily when he was told of the missing river on his return from New York.

A TfL spokesman said: "The overwhelming public reaction is that the Tube and Thames should be reunited, so that's exactly what we will do.

"New maps showing the Thames will be reintroduced from December, the date of the next scheduled revision of the map. We are also looking again at the provision of zonal information to ensure that it is widely available to customers and aim to reach a conclusion on that, also by December, when the new Circle Line service needs to be reflected."

TfL added that it will look at other ways to prevent the map from "becoming too cluttered to be useful".

New Signage To Stop Heavy Traffic

The town council has been critical of some of the notices, saying they are more confusing than they are helpful. One sign on the existing Kingspit Lane lorry route actually directs HGVs into the town via Angel Street because it fails to make clear it refers to deliveries only.

Now there is to be new signage at Kingspit Lane, the Welldiggers pub junction, the Midhurst Road/ Station Road junction and Pound Street, where one sign has been covered up for most of the time since it was installed in May.

The county council has said the new signs will be installed in the next two or three months.

Cemetery Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs this time from Pickens County, South Carolina as signs identifying the cemeteries in Pickens County have been completed and will be placed in local graveyards soon. County Administrator J. Chappell Hurst said county officials formed a committee comprised of locals knowledgeable of county history and tasked them with creating a list of cemeteries in the county.

The signs contain both the name of the cemeteries and an identifying number.

“Someone could take this brochure, ride around Pickens County and identify cemeteries that have historical significance or have meaning to them,” Hurst said. “It’ll give them some information about the cemeteries.”

The signs also contain map and GPS coordinates to make locating them easier. 50 signs have already been placed in cemeteries.

Worthing Signs A Sign Of Confusion

More news from the world of signage from Hants and Dorset Signs this time from the UK as the city of Worthing still displays a batch of parking restriction signs capable of confusing so many people. The controversial signage leads to a steady stream of complaints by motorists who just don't understand, or continually misinterpret, what it means, the issue even earned a lengthy slot on regional television.

The ongoing row over sky-high parking charges in the multi-storey car parks, plus the zealous attentions of parking enforcement officers in now causing many many problems. Other on-street parking restriction notices don't pose problems. The voucher parking pay-and-display arrangement is straightforward – drivers should just make sure they don't overstay the stated time limit.

Even Worthing Council's chief executive has confessed that the signs are confusing. However it would appear the signage has been approved by the Independent Parking Adjudicators, and that motorists are expected to know its meaning through the Highway Code and local parking leaflets.

Signage Review

More signage news from around the world fron Hants and Dorset Signs - this time from Arizona as just five months after it amended the city sign ordinance, the Kingman City Council appears set to amend it again. At Tuesday evening's Council meeting, Mayor John Salem directed city staff to initiate the amendment process, this time seeking to loosen the city's regulations on on-going temporary signs, which have been a cause for concern for many local businesses after the city tightened those same regulations in April.

The amended sign ordinance initially took effect in June, and by the following month, scads of business owners - car dealers in particular - had been served code violation notices for essentially putting up the same types of signage they had for years. Several business owners, including local car dealership owners Martin Swanty and Hank Nolte, approached Council with their concerns at the July 20 meeting, leading Council to impose a moratorium on all sign code enforcement until the matter could be resolved.

Over the following month, Swanty, Nolte and six other business owners met three times to work out their suggestions for revisions to the sign ordinance. Those suggestions were presented to Council on Tuesday.

Million Dollar Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs as a state lawmaker is complaining about signs that let passing motorists know when Ohio road work is courtesy of Federal Stimulus money. The state ordered the markers to identify Ohio's 365 stimulus projects at both ends of construction zones, at a cost estimated at more than $1 million.

The money will come out of the $935 million in federal funds the state is receiving for highway work. State Senator Tim Grendell, a Republican from Northeast Ohio's Geauga County, says the signs are a waste of money, and there are better uses for the funds. But ODOT spokesman Scott Varner says the state felt it was important to show taxpayers how stimulus money is being used.

The signs are posted on two Hancock County projects--I-75 between Ohio 613 and the Wood County Line and the Ohio 15-US 68 Expressway just south of the intersection with I-75.

Signs To Light The Way

The proposals, drawn up by Marzia Abel, will be considered by the development control committee at a meeting today. The head of planning Andrew Meddle is recommending consent should be given to the schemes.

The first proposal is for banners on 45 lamp posts along the length of the High Street from the Victoria to the Royals shopping centres. The council is also planning two illuminated signs on the east and west sections of the railway bridge for 12 weeks over the Christmas period. Roof Signs

More signage news and reports from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs - thistime moreon historic roof signs from America. Anyone travelling Hollywood after dark has probably seen the very large, flashing, Vegas-like image of a tequila bottle atop a 12-story building at the intersection of Hollywood and Vine. But very few probably know that the sign originally spelled out the legend, “Bank of Hollywood Building” in 10 ft. high letters without benefit of neon enhancement or lighting.

The 1929 building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, no longer houses a bank and offices, but has undergone “adaptive reuse” to become “live/work” condominiums. At the same time, the “Bank of Hollywood Building” sign turned into one advertising “The Lion King” at the adjacent Pantages Theater, then “Snow White” at Disneyland, and finally “Patron” tequila.

City Building department records show that a permit was issued to convert the “on-site” rooftop sign at the Bank of Hollywood Building (more commonly known as the Hollywood Equitable Building) to an “open panel” roof sign in April, 2007. The existing sign was designated as “on-site” even though the Lion King sign that went up in 2000 and the Snow White sign that went up in 2006 were clearly “off-site” signs, advertising goods or services not available on the site.

Love The Business Hate The Signs

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset signs - this time from California - as earlier this year, when it looked as if the small town of Julian was about to lose its only gas station, the new owners were treated like heroes when they bought the place and saved it, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars replacing old pumps and remodeling the small business. While the town is still really pleased that a gas station exists, some of the local residents are not nearly so happy with the signs attached to it.

Ramco Petroleum — Beer . Wine . Grocery . Lotto . Money Order . Check Cashing,” one sign reads in bright orange, red, green and black lettering. The old gold town of Julian is all about history. The whole town is in a historic district and has design standards that encourage architecture, signage and other features to resemble the period from 1870 to 1913.

Ray Butris, manager of the Julian station, met with the review board this week.

He was quoted as saying;“We're going to change the signs, and everybody in Julian will be happy. The plastic, multicolored signs will come down and be replaced with something more appropriate by the end of the month".

The station also will reduce what is now some rather bright white lighting, which prompted one resident to say that at night the place looked like ” “close encounters of the worst kind.”

Holiday Inn To Choose LED Signage

More signage news from around the world - as part of its $1 billion global relaunch, Holiday Inn has redesigned its logo, requiring new exterior signage for more than 3,200 locations. In lieu of neon or fluorescent lighting, the chain selected LEDs for their energy efficiency and long lifespan. The new signs are expected to save hoteliers $4.4 million annually in maintenance and energy savings.

The transformation to the new lit signage was no easy task. The project has involved more than 20 sign manufacturers creating 9,300 channel letter and box signs with the high-performance LED lighting inside. Holiday Inn expects to cut energy usage by more than half and achieve an estimated 52 percent reduction in kilowatt hours with signs lit an average of 12 hours per day year round.

Georgetown Reviews Signage Rules

More signage news from around the world from Hants and Dorset Signs - the material, height, color and placement of signs in Georgetown County in South Carolina is underreview and scrutiny. The Georgetown County Planning Commission is working its way through the existing county's 23-page sign ordinance hoping to eventually have something to present to County Council. Over the past 18 months, the planning commission has been working to tidy up the county's ordinances as development has slowed. Last year, the commission worked to put in place countywide zoning. Less than half the county was zoned two years ago.

The commission had its third meeting Wednesday and considered the use of neon signs, banners, roof signage and color palette. Commissioners Glenda Shoulette and Larry Fox said the neon signs were necessary in some cases.Ultimately, the commission agreed to propose prohibiting the neon signs along the Waccamaw Neck Overlay Zone, except for open and closed signs. The overlay zone covers 500 feet on either side of U.S. 17 and institutes regulations on signage, building materials, roof pitch and the paint color of buildings.

Downmarket Signage Row

More signage news from around the UK from Hants and Dorset signs - the arrival of the 99p Stores in Lymington Hampshire has have raised the odd eyebrow in the town that suggested is was too posh for an Argos – but the latest saga has angered the new shop’s owners. The family-run discount shop, which last month moved into the site which was previously occupied by a Woolworths, have been told to take down their 99p sign because it is not in keeping with the town’s Georgian high street.

Theywill face prosecution if it is not removed as they do not have proper planning permission for the shop front signage.

A spokesperson for the New Forest District Council, said;" it would be extremely unlikely the company would obtain retrospective planning permission. Our judgement is that the sign is pretty awful and we will give them a brief opportunity to voluntarily remove it before we begin prosecution proceedings.”
