signage news from around the world from
Hants and Dorset signs - this time from California - as earlier this year, when it looked as if the small town of Julian was about to lose its only gas station, the new owners were treated like heroes when they bought the place and saved it, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars replacing old pumps and remodeling the small business. While the town is still really pleased that a gas station exists, some of the local residents are not nearly so happy with the signs attached to it.
Ramco Petroleum — Beer . Wine . Grocery . Lotto . Money Order . Check Cashing,” one sign reads in bright orange, red, green and black lettering. The old gold town of Julian is all about history. The whole town is in a historic district and has design standards that encourage architecture, signage and other features to resemble the period from 1870 to 1913.
Ray Butris, manager of the Julian station, met with the review board this week.
He was quoted as saying;“We're going to change the signs, and everybody in Julian will be happy. The plastic, multicolored signs will come down and be replaced with something more appropriate by the end of the month".
The station also will reduce what is now some rather bright white lighting, which prompted one resident to say that at night the place looked like ” “close encounters of the worst kind.”
